Last night I got 10 million cool mom points when I got to take Zoe Monster to see The Illusionists at PPAC. As you read earlier this week, she is a huge Colin Cloud fan and now I think it is safe to say she is a huge fan of four other magicians as well. The show was two hours of pure magic!
The Trickster, Jeff Hobson is the epitome of glamour and showmanship. Don’t be fooled by his innocent appearance; Jeff has audiences laughing long after the curtain goes down. Jeff would essentially pop out of nowhere in between acts and do hilarious magic right in the audience. I was in stitches especially when his attempt to find a seven year-old boy for a particular trick revealed that basically every child in the audience was a huge liar. Hobson’s outfit changes alone are worth the admission price!
The Inventor, Kevin James is known for innovative illusions, is an inventor, comedian and collector of the strange and unusual. Kevin is one of the most prolific inventors of magic in the world and has created some of the most celebrated illusions of the last century. His Chaplin inspired trick had the audience gasping. Kevin James also gave me my new personal favorite memory when he chose Zoe to go onstage for a very beautiful trick called “The Rose.” She got to perform and be part of magic in front of a packed audience and was the most excited I think she has ever been.
The Manipulator, An Ha Lim: The first place winner at Korea’s Busan International Magic Competition (2006), Italy Club Convention Manipulation (2006) and World Magic Seminar in Asia (2007) was incredible. His up close card tricks dazzled the audience and his final trick of the night was absolutely beautiful to watch.
The Daredevil, Jonathan Goodwin, is widely considered one of the most creative, skilled, and frankly crazy stunt performers in the world. He is an accomplished knife thrower, archer, escape artist, fakir, martial artist, free diver, and free climber. Unlike the other performers in the show, Jonathan is not a magician or illusionist but left the audience breathless with his death- defying stunts. His crossbow stunt literally had Zoe holding her breath.
Finally, what can I say about Colin Cloud? His deduction skills and tricks are just incredible. I don’t want to reveal too much, but you will be left scratching your head when he finishes the first trick of the evening. His second act involved many members of the audience and defies reason entirely. I may be partial, but Colin Cloud absolutely steals the show!
The Illusionists are at PPAC through tomorrow and you would be a fool to miss out on this incredible, magical, and delightful show!
