I just got out of Les Misérables, playing now through Saturday at PPAC, and it was amazing! I have seen the play many times before and this was leaps and bounds the BEST production yet. Here is why:
- The sets were remarkable. Through transforming physical pieces coupled with realistic three dimensional graphics, you will be transported to France and feel like you are at the barricade. The first play I saw with this technological set design was Young Frankenstein on Broadway, and I have to say that this touring production significantly improves upon it.
- The cast will give you all the feels. Usually in an ensemble heavy show, there is one weak link, but not here. The cast was perfect! Nick Cartell portrays the fugitive ‘Jean Valjean.’ He is joined by Josh Davis as ‘Javert,’ J Anthony Crane as ‘Thénardier,’ Allison Guinn as ‘Madame Thénardier,’ Melissa Mitchell as ‘Fantine,’ Matt Shingledecker as ‘Enjolras,’ Phoenix Best as ‘Éponine,’ Joshua Grosso as ‘Marius’ and Jillian Butler as ‘Cosette.’ Zoe Glick and Sophie Knapp alternate in the role of ‘Little Cosette/Young Éponine.’ Jordan Cole and Julian Emile Lerner alternate in the role of ‘Gavroche.’
- Matt Shingledecker as Enjolras looks like a bonus Hemsworth brother…granted this didn’t improve the play itself, but it sure made me happy!
- The story is timeless. If you cannot relate to this show, check your pulse. Its universal themes will make you consider how you live your life…#whatwouldjeanvaljeando
