Although I often review Disney films on this site, you may be unaware that I consider myself quite the cinephile; I even taught a film class. So this next statement may come as quite a shock: I never watched Star Wars until a few years ago when one of my students practically forced me to. I obviously enjoyed them, but I didn’t become a real fan or anything…that is until this weekend when I finally had my own Star Wars moment when I watched The Force Awakens.
The latest installment is amazing. J.J Abrams managed to pay homage to the original trilogy while making the film feel modern and entirely new. I will stay absolutely spoiler free here and advise you to stay clear of the internet to have the most pure viewing experience possible. So instead of a regular review, I want to focus solely on one character: Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. Sure the original trilogy had Princess Leia, but Rey finally brings a female character to the heroic forefront. I couldn’t help but think while watching what an inspiration Rey will be to girls everywhere. The force will awaken in many little girls who may now be asking for lightsabers instead of Barbies at the toy store.
I highly recommend Star Wars: The Force Awakens for everyone. Disney has certainly sprinkled its pixie dust over the franchise and I see only successes for it in the future. I’ve included some activity sheets below to get your little stormtrooper ready for the movie; just click them to enlarge and then print….may the force be with you!
